Breakage #1

12″x12″, Oil on Panel

One day, I broke a glass in the kitchen. It slipped out of my hand while I was taking it out of the cupboard. What it became after that looked interesting. It broke in a way that left much of its shape intact, and the jagged edges drew a dynamic line around its circumference. I knew I wanted to paint it, but wasn’t sure what context would be best until I set it in a clump of tissue paper. The paper’s creases and edges seemed to have similar sharp quality to the broken glass, despite being used often to protect fragile objects from breaking in the first place. I like that irony.
